After months of building, testing, and auditing Ethos is now live on Base Mainnet. Here’s everything you need to know →
Genesis Claim
Ethos is the credibility and reputation protocol for Web3 for the future. But credibility and reputation already exist in Web3; they’re just poorly documented and lack strong signals.
We want to recognize that existing credibility to people in the Web3 community with the launch of Ethos' native recognition system, Contributor XP. Contributor XP recognizes those who help others understand who can be trusted and who to avoid, using the various mechanisms of the Ethos protocol. Contributor XP will have future uses and functions in Ethos' protocol.
You can get your initial Contributor XP claim at app.ethos.network/claim
We recognized the following people with this initial claim:
- Those of you who helped us test during our testnet
- Various tight-knit, reputable communities that we partnered with
- Investors and early supporters of Ethos
- Existing companies, protocols, projects, and notable people in the space
We went through extensive efforts to remove sybiling for the entire XP claim, with a net result of only about 4,500 eligible users.
The claim has a referral system. Share your ref link with someone, and you will get a 20% boost on each other’s base Contributor XP claim. Some people have larger XP claims than others, which will reward even more XP boost, so be thoughtful about whose ref link you use and who uses yours! Everyone in the ~4,500 eligible people gets 10 referral links to share. Sharing with someone who had no base claim will result in 0 extra XP rewarded for the ref link sharer.
Genesis Block
We’re starting today with “The first 100,” or 100 people chosen from our community, to help us begin Ethos with a credible foundation. These people are trusted members focused on adding value by contributing to Ethos early on. Each of these people has 1 invite to give out tomorrow, so if you’re hungry to get to Ethos early, you might want to chase some of those people down. Remember, the invitation system has a bonding period between you and their score, so you might find potential inviters to be a bit more cautious if you don’t know them well.
As time progresses, we’ll continue to give out more invites for people to share beyond the initial 1. This is likely to be driven by your reputation score, how much you’re contributing, and who you’ve previously invited.
Earning Contributor XP
The easiest way to earn contributor XP today is by having a profile on Ethos, writing reviews, vouching for people, and contributing in ways others find helpful. Securing an early invite to Ethos will be critical to earning XP.
That said, you can earn contributor XP by installing and using our Chrome extension daily. The chrome extension surfaces Ethos scores on Twitter and is one of the core value props of Ethos. With it, you’ll get more insight into who’s trustworthy and who’s not while earning 100XP/day just by having it installed.
Lastly, our unannounced product, which will launch shortly after this one, will allow EVERYONE to earn Contributor XP at the same scale. It will not be exclusive to people who have invites or profiles on the Ethos network.
Mainnet Changes
We haven’t shipped any code to our testnet environment in nearly 6 weeks, and there have been a lot of significant improvements to the product most people haven’t seen. Just so you know, here’s a quick shortlist:
- We’ve switched to Privy for connecting various socials and logging in. This means your original social connection doesn’t require you to tweet anything, which was a point of feedback we heard from a few!
- Privy enables us to add a smart wallet and sponsor gas for users. This means you have an incredibly seamless (with room for improvement!) way to interact with the blockchain, even when writing reviews, comments, upvoting, etc. No signing transactions, no gas involved.
- Ethos is now fully mobile-first. You’ll need to install the PWA on mobile to use Ethos now, but this enables us to give you a more native experience and even do things like send notifications when your score changes, when someone replies to a comment, etc.
- We’ve given a “Reputation boost” to some existing, notable people in the space with existing reputations. This will temporarily boost users to “reputable,” and we will remove these as the protocol becomes more stable. This should also make the Chrome extension more valuable. Disagree with someone who got this? Let us know in Discord!
- The last significant change is you can now vouch for people without Ethos profiles. Massive fan of CZ and want to vouch for him? Previously, he had to be on Ethos first. Now, you can vouch for Twitter accounts and wallet addresses - earning them some sweet $$ and allowing you to more broadly show where your loyalty is.
Looking forward
This is our opportunity to learn from the community- what’s working? What’s broken? What pisses you off. Are we overvaluing vouches in credibility scores? Are we undervaluing people who write positive contributions to Ethos? Does the feed suck? Do we need better filtering?
We’ve learned a lot from the testnet, but we still have plenty more to learn with switching to mainnet- real money and a more exclusive environment.
Contributor XP will be rewarded over the course of a time-bound “First Season.” As we are still learning from the product and if our product has a product market fit, we won’t yet share the intended timeline for the first season.
Join our Discord community, where we want to hear from YOU. If you’re missing an invite, this is a great way to get to know existing community members and potentially secure one.
Stay tuned for our next product—hint, hint: It’s a bit more speculative and degenerate, but it very much aligns with the Ethos of Ethos.
