We're introducing EIP-13 for community voting: "Vouching Recalibration."
The Problem
Some users have discovered that getting lots of 0.01 ETH vouches from many different wallets can artificially inflate their credibility scores. This gaming behavior undermines the integrity of the vouching system.
What EIP-13 Does
EIP-13 recalibrates how vouching impacts credibility scores to reduce the effectiveness of this gaming strategy. The goal is to ensure that meaningful vouches from reputable users carry appropriate weight, while minimizing the impact of many small, potentially coordinated vouches.
Shipping with EIP-12
This change will ship alongside EIP-12, which acts as a balancer (but not a multiplier to this). The two EIPs work together to create a more robust and fair vouching system.
Fast-Track Voting
We shortened the voting period for this one to a day because we wanted to ship these changes quickly. The faster we can close these gaming vectors, the better the system works for everyone.
Why This Matters
The vouching system is core to Ethos' thesis: making reputation expensive in social or financial capital to spoof. When users find ways to game the system with minimal cost (like coordinated 0.01 ETH vouches), it undermines trust in the entire credibility score.
By recalibrating how vouches are weighted, we ensure that:
- Quality over quantity - A few meaningful vouches from reputable users matter more than many small vouches
- Cost of gaming increases - It becomes more expensive to artificially inflate scores
- Legitimate users benefit - Real reputation signals become clearer
