On June 4, 2025, Ethos put EIP-3.1 live. Under the change, if someone you reviewed positively or vouched for is successfully slashed, you lose credibility score of your own. The rule replaced an earlier proposal, EIP-3, that Ethos had published and then withdrawn in the two weeks before.
The change made supporting someone on Ethos carry a cost if that support turns out to be misplaced. A positive review or a vouch became a statement you could be held to.
The problem: accounts reviewing each other
When announcing the proposal, Ethos quoted a post by @serpinxbt. They wrote that Ethos “only gets better with real human data,” and that over the previous few weeks a cluster of accounts had been identified: the “Bluebird” group, led by @NFTCPS.
According to @serpinxbt, the group had “spoofed” their way to reputable and exemplary credibility levels by reviewing each other more than 200 times.
EIP-3: Sequential Review Eligibility
On May 22, 2025, Ethos published its latest Ethos Improvement Proposal, EIP-3 “Sequential Review Eligibility”, and described it as a potential change to how credibility scores work. Ethos asked users to read the proposal, vote on Snapshot and join the discussion on Ethos.
Ethos also reminded users that everyone with an Ethos profile was eligible to vote.
EIP-3 is replaced by EIP-3.1
On May 28, 2025, Ethos announced it was throwing EIP-3 out and revising it. The replacement, EIP-3.1, opened for voting that day.
EIP-3.1 took a different approach: it would remove credibility score from users who had positive reviews or vouches for a person who gets slashed. Ethos said the goal was to use the power of slashing and to discourage people from supporting accounts they don’t actually know.
The proposal set out who would be penalized after a successful slash. Supporters of the slashed party who had:
- Positive reviews of that person
- Vouched ETH for that person
would receive credibility score penalties for that support. The size of the penalty depended on the kind of support:
- Reviews: 10% of the slashed credibility score
- Vouches: 20% of the slashed credibility score
Vouching, which involves putting ETH behind someone, carried twice the penalty of a positive review.
EIP-3.1 goes live
On June 4, 2025, Ethos announced that EIP-3.1 had been approved and was live. From that point, anyone who had reviewed positively or vouched for someone who was then successfully slashed would lose credibility score of their own.
Ethos noted that this applied to slashes already in progress at the time, including those against @JamesWynnReal and @blast. The posts don’t record how those slashes ended.
Protecting your own score
Ethos reminded users that they could remove their vouches or reviews before a slash was decided if they wanted to protect their own score.
Ethos also said it planned to start sending notifications to users who had open positive reviews or vouches for people actively being slashed. As of June 4, 2025, that was described as work to come soon.
