How the Ethos Chrome extension helped @usoppu avoid a DM scam

On May 6, 2025, Ethos said its Chrome extension had helped an X user avoid a scam. According to Ethos, @usoppu was saved by the 7 negative reviews left for @eddiewuym on Ethos.

The case shows what a reputation network is for. A scam can look convincing in a DM, but what other people have already said about an account can tell a different story.

A scam that looked too legit

@usoppu had posted a thread about a DM conversation that turned out to be what they called “an extremely sophisticated scam attempt.” They wrote that “the scam looked way too legit,” and said they were sharing the experience to help others avoid falling for it.

Ethos replied that @usoppu was saved by the seven negative reviews on @eddiewuym’s Ethos profile. In this case, the reviews others had already written served as the warning.

Reputation shown directly in X

Ethos credited its Chrome extension, Ethos Everywhere, which lets people see who’s trustworthy and who isn’t directly in X. Ethos described the extension as “out here working miracles preventing people from getting scammed.”

The point is timing. A warning helps most when it’s visible at the moment someone is deciding whether to trust an account, not after the fact.

A note on OpenSea permissions

In a follow-up post, Ethos addressed people who, like @beausecurity, are careful about the permissions browser extensions request because of possible security vulnerabilities. Ethos said they should be.

At the time, the extension had permission to read and write on OpenSea. Ethos said it was working on an improvement to that permission. The posts don’t record when that change shipped.

In the meantime, Ethos pointed users to a setting they could change themselves:

  1. Click “Manage extension” for Ethos Everywhere in Chrome.
  2. Turn off the extension’s ability to write directly to OpenSea.

That let people keep the reputation information in X while limiting what the extension could do on OpenSea.
