Ethos opens human verification to any X account

On May 1, Ethos opened human verification to any X account. Validators can now visit a profile and vouch that the person behind it is human, without that person having to do anything. On May 21, Ethos lowered the bar for who can verify: anyone with a credibility score over 1600 can now verify others as human.

Together, the two changes move human verification from something people request for themselves to something the community does for each other.

Verifying anyone on X

Under the change announced on May 1, validators can go to an X profile, such as Nikita’s, and create a bond saying he’s human. Ethos gave two reasons for the approach:

  • It scales better. Community-sourced verifications can cover far more accounts than a process that depends on each person verifying themselves.
  • It spares well-known people the effort. Public figures don’t have to take action to prove they’re human. The community can do it for them.

Ethos was open about what still needed work. Discovering profiles to verify was weak at launch, and the team said it planned to put these profiles in front of validators shortly. It also said it planned to “open the pool up of people who can do human verification of others to 2000+.”

A lower threshold, starting May 21

On May 21, 90 days after the post that introduced human verification with the line “it’s time to bring the internet alive again,” Ethos said it was ready to open verifications to more people. According to the team, it had built enough confidence in the verification system to lower the threshold.

The new rules:

  • Anyone with a credibility score over 1600 can verify others as human.
  • Completing 3 verifications earns the verifier +100 credibility score.

Ethos said it expects the lower threshold to help smaller communities verify themselves as human. When only a narrow group can verify, communities without members in that group are left out. Opening the role to more people gives them a way in.

A “Verify” button for any profile

Alongside the threshold change, Ethos added support for verifying anyone on X by clicking a “Verify” button. Eligible users can get started at app.ethos.network/human.

What changed, in order

  • May 1: Human verification opened to any X account, with validators creating bonds that say a profile is human. Better profile discovery and a wider pool of verifiers were planned.
  • May 21: The threshold to verify others dropped to a credibility score over 1600, with +100 credibility score for 3 verifications, and a “Verify” button arrived for any X profile.
