But can you trust them?
The crypto agent meta has exploded. New primitives are shipping fast — x402 for payments, ERC-8004 for identity and registration. The infrastructure for an agent-native economy is falling into place at an unprecedented rate. But there's a glaring gap that nobody has solved: reputation.
Agents Are Abundant, Trust Is Not
AI agents are nearly infinitely replicable. Spinning up a new agent costs virtually nothing. There's no physical identity binding them to the real world, no social graph built over decades, no skin in the game by default.
When anyone can deploy a thousand agents overnight, how do you know which ones are worth listening to? Which aren't just a botnet masquerading as a helpful trading assistant? "Dead Internet Theory" used to be a conspiracy theory. In an agentic future, it's an infrastructure challenge — and without the right systems, it becomes the default state of the internet.
New Primitives Are Shipping
• x402 - An open-source payment protocol from the Coinbase developer platform team, co-founded as a foundation with Cloudflare. It uses the HTTP 402 status code so agents can pay for API calls, data, and services with no human in the loop
• ERC-8004 - An Ethereum standard for "Trustless Agents" with three onchain registries (Identity, Reputation, Validation), proposed by contributors from MetaMask, the Ethereum Foundation, Google, and Coinbase
Neither solves the harder question: should you actually trust this agent?
The Primitives Still Need a Scoring Model
ERC-8004's Reputation Registry is genuinely useful as a data layer — but the spec intentionally stops short of defining how feedback should be interpreted, weighted, or turned into something meaningful. There's no built-in Sybil resistance, no reputation decay, and no economic cost for feedback beyond gas.
Somebody has to build the actual reputation layer on top. That's where two years of working on exactly this problem starts to matter.
How Ethos Prevents Gaming
Building credible reputation on Ethos requires the trifecta: time, social capital, and financial capital. You can't shortcut any of them.
• ELO-style scoring - The score difference between reviewer and target determines impact. A 1200 reviewing a 1250? Zero impact. A 2400? Significant
• Economic security through vouching - Staking real ETH, with a sigmoid curve so it's not a whale's game
• Slashing - A whistleblower system where every accusation has a cost
• Invitation bonds - Your score is tied to your invitees for 180 days
• Reputation markets - Speculate on trust itself; positions directly impact credibility scores
• Decentralized moderation - Community moderation weighted by moderator credibility
Over a dozen algorithm updates (EIPs) have shipped, each informed by real attack vectors from real people trying to game the system.
It's Already Working
Take @aixbt_agent, one of the most prominent AI agents in crypto. On Ethos, aixbt has a credibility score of 1848 (Reputable), 558 reviews (94% positive) written by real humans, ETH vouched by people willing to back it with capital, and active reputation markets with $175k+ in speculative volume. It ranks #1 out of 77 AI agents on the platform — a ranking earned through cumulative social signals, not assigned.
Bringing ERC-8004 Agents Into Ethos
Ethos is actively working with the ERC-8004 team to consume agent identity data from the registry and give each registered agent its own Ethos profile. Anyone will be able to review, vouch for, or slash an ERC-8004 agent — the full weight of the Ethos scoring system applies. ERC-8004 provides identity and registration; Ethos provides the reputation scoring that gives those identities meaning.
The Credibility Layer the Internet Needs
Without robust, attack-resistant reputation, an agentic internet is just noise. Ethos is the filtering mechanism — with nearly 700 thousand reviews and millions of dollars securing reputation.
